Ian Parsons on ‘Labyrinth’

“You will hear something of both the fragility and the resilience of that in the three pieces of Evan's music I'll be playing on the show, including a work that was written prior to the opera but which nevertheless found something of a way into the final work. Each of the pieces capture that strange mix of sensations and images that the labyrinth, both mythological and psychological, can evoke, even with the modest but brilliantly crafted musical resources for which Labyrinth calls: the tensions, the fear, the fragile connection to a bewildering place, but also the sense of strength to take it all on. It is music that brilliantly brings together the diverse worlds that shape us, through ancient stories, through our physical location in the here and now, and through the impacts within us of what happens arounds and about us. You will hear, too, in the music, the ease with which Evan Lawson works across quite different musical media: solo piano; violin with electronics; and small ensemble.”
